This is a question that we should really be asking ourselves especially with all those DIY TV shows out there these days.
“When to Contract Out”
Let’s be honest most of us that watch these show think that doing anything around the home is easy and simple and can be done in a weekend.
But Sorry this is really the truth and has some of us leading ourselves down the garden path into trouble when it comes to those home DIY projects.
We are certainly all about doing just about everything ourselves, not only when it can save you money and time, but its really rewarding to be able to do it yourself too. But You need to know when you should contract out that project and when we can give it ago ourselves.
Now we have some great projects that you can tackle yourself and you can check them out here. But for other projects it is better to contact them out to the professionals.
Any project involving electricity, plumbing is required to be contracted out to a license contractor. You need to have a certificate for these works. Do not try these on your own.
The other thing to take into consideration is can you do without that room or item for a long period of time. Lets face it doing it ourselves can certainly take a bit longer than a professional. If the answer is yes then give it a go its great when your able to DIY it.
But if the answer is really no, and really be honest with yourself here then contract it out to get the job done quickly and done right the first time.
There are certainly jobs we can give a go ourselves like tiling that backsplash, we have a great post on how to do this here. But I would not try a bathroom floor, this is something you want to get right the first time and can be tricky to do as you need to ensure that the floor slopes in the right direction to ensure that you don’t flood your whole home.
Sometimes it can be hard to admit defeat, but honestly this is not a failure on your part. Knowing when its better to hire someone is actually a really brave thing to do. With all that is going on in our lives and it just makes more sense to hire a professional to get the job done and move on to the next project. Because they are really never ending.
So, next time your watching a DIY TV show remember that they have a lot of help behind the scene that help them to get the job done. But always look at those jobs to do yourself and give it go just make sure that don’t rush into them without a little homework first.
Take a good look at everything that needs to be done and don’t forget to look at the costs involved and time frames to get it all done.
