Let’s face it, men aren’t always the easiest people to throw a party for. It’s not too bad if they’re into something like Star Wars, Formula 1 or football, but what do you do if they don’t have anything specific that they’re into???
I was in this exact predicament recently as my partner was turning the big “40”. Being such a milestone birthday, I wanted to create something special, but had absolutely no idea where to start. I went into total research mode, scanned the internet and pintrest. Nothing. Not one single idea jumped at me. So rather than fixating on a theme, I took a step back and just concentrated on the menu. I figured once I had the menu nailed down, then the rest will fall into place.
It worked. Once I worked out what food I wanted to serve, I just built my theme around it. I went for a simple “men’s barbeque” theme. Lots of meat, and not a single veggie or salad in sight.
- hot dogs
- mini sausage rolls
- snack bar
The sausage rolls I made ahead of time and froze, which just left the sausages and patties to cook on the barbeque. I also prepared a snack bar filled with different types of lollies, chocolates, popcorn and chips. The snack bar was a huge hit with the kids as well as the men (who are really just big kids anyway).
I kept the decorations really simple too. I collected some empty beer bottles, placed a native wattle flower from the garden into each one, added a model car and placed them in the centre of all the tables.
For the main table I used some MDF letters, painted them white, and spelt out “40 Birthday” and “snack bar”. I sat the letters on wooden crates to give height and decorated around them. Incredibly simple, but very effective.
So, if you ever get stuck for birthday party theme, try starting with the menu. It may help to set the overall theme of the party. Keep it simple and don’t over complicate things, plan ahead and make sure you take the time to enjoy yourself on the day too.
