How to Make a Donut Cake

Birthday Cake Idea

Coming up with different cake ideas for those we love can be daunting sometimes.  Kids are usually pretty easy to cater for as they have certain themes or characters that they’re into.  But it can get a little tricky when it comes to making a cake for an adult.

But it doesn’t have to be.  Sometimes thinking outside the square, and finding some internet inspiration, is all that’s needed to make an amazingly unique cake that everyone will want a slice of.

So, this is my take on a very simple Donut Cake.

I made this delicious cake using Krispy Kreme donuts.  When it’s all finished, it’ll look like a normal layered cake, but when you cut it open it’ll reveal the surprise.

I only needed to make a smallish cake, so I used a box of 12 mixed donuts, but you can choose any type of donut you like.  I also grabbed a bag of Allen’s mixed lollies and made a batch of simple buttercream icing.

Krispy Kreme

I started by placing 4 donuts on the cake tray and dusted lightly with icing sugar.

I placed a few lollies in the middle of the donuts and in the centre where the donuts met.

I then spread a layer of mocha-flavoured buttercream icing to help keep all the donuts in place.  That’s the first layer done.

Repeat this process two more times to give you a total of 3 layers.  If you’re using different types of donuts, don’t forget to mix up the flavours so it’s distributed throughout the cake.

Final Layer of Donut

To finish, cover the whole cake with buttercream icing.  If you’re after a smooth finish, dip your knife into hot water, shake off the excess and run it carefully over the icing.  The heat from the knife will give you a beautifully smooth finish.

To decorate, I topped it off with a mixture of chocolate pieces and lollies.  Utter decadence.

This cake could not have been any easier.  There was no baking involved, it was a simple matter of assembling the pieces together and having fun with the decorating.

It was so much fun to watch as my sister and nephew cut into the cake.  Once they all realised that it was donuts and lollies, everyone wanted a piece.  No left overs.

So, next time you’re stuck for an idea on what to do for a birthday or special occasion, give this one a try.  It’s so adaptable and can be tailored to anyone.  If you’re catering for a large crowd, just add more donuts.  It’s also perfect for a baby gender party.  Simply tint the icing pink or blue for the layers and cover in a neutral colour.
