Performing a few DIY computer maintenance tasks doesn’t have to be difficult. If you’re not overly tech-savvy, it can be incredibly daunting making changes to your computer or installing new software. So, we thought we’d start with one of the essentials by showing you how you can install your own security software (antivirus) on your computer.
Electronic devices are fantastic – when they work properly. Having security software properly installed on all your electronic devices is critical to protecting everyone in the family. The cost of purchasing security software can be expensive, but the cost of not having the correct software can be much more.
Today we’re going to outline how to:
- remove the old security software
- install the new security software
The reason we suggest you remove the old software first, even if it’s the same brand, is that the two programs could interfere with each other and cause issues with the operating systems. There is nothing more frustrating than a glitching system. So, by removing the old security software first, you then allow the new security system to install cleanly.
Remove the old Software
- Go into your Settings (or into your Control Panel)
- Select Apps and Features (if using your Control Panel, select Programs, then Programs and Features)
- This will list all of the programs that are installed on your computer.
- Scroll down until you find your security software.
- Place your cursor over your security software program and right click the mouse button. In my example, it is Norton Security.
- Click on the Uninstall button.
- Depending on your system this will take a few minutes and you may be asked if you are sure you want to uninstall. Make sure you select YES.
That’s it for the first part, your security software has been removed. Next, onto the important bit.
Install New Security Software
This part is pretty easy as the program will do most of the hard work for you. All you need to do is select a few buttons and set up your user account.
Most security software programs are all online now and don’t come with a disc. All you need is access to the internet.
The first thing you’ll need to do is purchase your new security software. You can purchase the software from any major retailer such as Harvey Norman or Officeworks, or you can purchase the program direct from the security software company. Shop around to see which one is good value for money. Once you’ve purchased your software, you’re given a product key code which you use when you download the program.
Note: Be aware that your antivirus software has a lifespan, which will vary depending on the type you’ve bought. Most often it will protect your device for 12 months. After this time, you will receive a notification that your antivirus software is about to expire and you’ll be given the option to renew online. If you choose this option, ensure you read the fine print. Most will state that by choosing to renew online, it will renew each time it expires so you are bound to a contract whereby the company will automatically charge your credit card each time it renews. Be aware that it may include additional charges, or an increase in price.
To ensure you have total control over your software, and its cost, we recommend you don’t opt to renew automatically. Once you’ve received notification that your security software is going to expire soon, quickly pop online and purchase the software of your choosing at the price you’re happy to pay. You can then install it when your current software expires. This option doesn’t take a lot of time, and gives you total control over your money.
Okay, so now that we have looked at how to purchase the software, let’s get on to installing it.
Go to your security software website.
If you have not used this particular security software before, then you will need to sign up and create an account. Just follow the sign-up process (email and password).
If you have used the security software before, then you will be prompted to sign in. Type in your email address and password, and click “sign in”.
In the “Get Started” page that pops up, click Download.
This is where you will enter the product key.
Type in the product key (this can be found on the piece of cardboard if you’ve purchased from in-store, or else on the receipt if purchased online) normally a 25 number and letter combination.
This is also where you may be prompted to set up pre-paid subscriptions. This is a personal choice. If you’re happy – go with it, if not – skip this section.
Click Agree to the Terms and Conditions and Download.
If the user account control window appears, click Continue and follow the instructions.
Your new security software will now be installed. Again, this may take a few minutes depending on your system.
If you have security software for multiple devices, then don’t forget to install the software on your other devices. It’s usually as easy as sending a link to another device which then clicks on it to download the software. But check with your software provider for instructions.
Congratulations! You’ve now protected your family’s electronic devices.
