With the holiday season just around the corner, now is a great time to think about getting your cleaning schedule organised. Don’t leave it until the day before guests to arrive to do 45-hours worth of decluttering, sorting and cleaning. Plan ahead, your sanity will thank you! So take a deep breath, read on, and get so completely organised that you’ll sail through the holiday season without a hitch.
Write a list. Yep, we’re harping on again about lists, but trust us – it works! I like to make 2 lists. The first list contains the usual everyday cleaning jobs we all do:
- Clean bathroom and toilet
- Wipe down kitchen benches
- Vacuum etc
The second list contains all the extra cleaning jobs I like to have done before a big event:
- Wash walls
- Clean windows and sliding door
- Mow lawns and rake leaves
- Clean outdoor furniture
- Wipe down kitchen cupboards
- Clean oven
- Dust skirtings and window sills
- Wipe door jams, doors and light switches

Once you’ve got your two lists, then put them into a schedule. This will be different for everyone as it will depend upon your daily routine, but the principle is the same regardless whether you work inside or outside the home.
For everyday cleaning jobs, your schedule might look like this:
For the larger cleaning jobs, I like to schedule them in a calendar. The biggest tip I can give you here is to allow yourself plenty of time. For instance, cleaning the oven doesn’t have to be done a day or two before Christmas. Do it a few weeks before hand. Same goes for things like cleaning your sofas, washing cushions, cleaning the exhaust fans and de-cobwebbing outside. Schedule your jobs evenly and don’t forget to ask others to help where they can.
Your schedule for the larger cleaning jobs may look like this:
How easy was that? Two steps and you’ve got your entire cleaning schedule organised for Christmas! For more helpful tips on organising yourself for an event, check out our post Planning for an Event.
